WINTER VOCABULARY CARDS

Introduction

The following words have been selected to provide scaffolding and support for creative story telling on the theme of winter. There are three packs of 30 word cards organised in increasing reading age. Use the cards to support oral story games and during drafting of creative writing. The cards can be used individually as additional stimulus and support or in group situations for collaborative story telling. You may also wish to combine packs and choose specific vocabulary matched to the student's needs and/or the task requirements.

Pack 1

Boots, button, carrot, chill, chimney, coat, cold, fire, frost, frozen, gloves, hat, hot, ice, lake, log, melt, mitts, North Pole, scarf, sled, snow, snowball, snowman, socks, soup, warm, white, wind and winter.

Pack 2

Blanket, bitter, below zero, cough, fleece, footprints, freezing, frostbite, glide, gust, hot chocolate, iceberg, icy, nippy, polar, reindeer, shiver, skate, ski, sleet, slide, slip, slush, sneeze, snowflake, storm, sweater, windy, wintry and woollens.

Pack 3

Arctic, avalanche, biting, black ice, blizzard, blustery, drift, flurries, frostbitten, glacier, hailstone, heating, hibernate, hypothermia, ice crystal, ice scraper, icicle igloo insulation, Jack Frost, overshoes, radiator, slippery, snowmobile, snow tyres, thermometer, toboggan, windchill factor, wonderland and zero degrees.

Instructions

Simply print on to card and cut out individual cards. Ideally laminate for durability.
