Helping all children become happy learners
Transition
New School
Going to a new school is a big change. Lot of things will be different. This can include:
where the school is
how you get to school
teachers and other school staff
where you can keep your things at school
where the toilets are and when you are allowed to use them
what happens at break time
what happens at lunch time
how lessons and classrooms are organised
new school uniform
new school rules
different timetables
lots of other students
All these changes may feel very uncomfortable at first. It is normal to feel anxious and a bit scared when starting a new school. Usually these feelings will go away after the first week or two. Things that can help include:
visiting the new school and finding out as much as possible before you start
talking about any worries you have
doing things that help you stay calm
Starting a new school can feel very uncomfortable at first but you will be OK. After a few weeks in your new school you will feel more comfortable as you learn and accept the changes.
New School Year
At the start of a new school year lots of things may change. This might include:
different teachers and other adults
different classrooms
different class rules
different lessons
different timetables
and sometimes different children
All these changes may feel uncomfortable at first. It is OK to feel a bit anxious and scared at the start of a new school year. Usually these feelings will go away after the first week or two. Things that can help include:
finding out about the changes
talking about any worries you have
doing things that help you stay calm
All the changes of a new school year can feel uncomfortable at first but you will soon be OK.
New Teacher
Most of the time the same teacher works with a class for the whole school year. But sometimes there is a change of teacher at a different time.
When a new teacher takes over a class they may often do things differently to the previous teacher. For example they may:
have slightly different ways of teaching
make changes to the class rules
not know everyone as well as the previous teacher
Having a new teacher may feel a little uncomfortable at first but you will be OK. You will get used to the new teacher like you got used to the previous teacher. Things that can help include:
listen carefully to what the new teacher says as things may be different
if you are unsure check what you need to do
give the teacher time to get to know everyone
talk to someone if you are worried
do things that help you stay calm
It can sometimes feel uncomfortable to have a change of teacher. They may do things differently but you will be OK.
When I Move Class
I move class at the start of a school year.
In my school I usually change classroom every year. I usually do this at the start of the school year. When I move some things may be different. This is OK.
Before I move class I can worry about things. It is normal to feel a bit anxious when moving class. I will be OK and my teacher and other staff will be there to help me.
When I move class there may be some changes to my school routine. I may be worried about these but I will be OK. I can do my calming activities if I feel anxious. I can ask an adult for help if I'm unsure about what I should do.
Moving class is OK. I may feel a little anxious but this will get better. I can ask for help if I need it.
Notes on creating your own personalised social story:
Use the above examples to create your own personalised social story for the child. If you need to modify the language to support younger children ensure that the exact meaning intended remains clear and unambiguous. You may want to add photographs or pictures to illustrate the meaning or provide motivation to use. Alternatively, print out versions of the social stories are available below.
