Temperature
Air Temperature
Temperature is how hot or cold something is. When people talk about the temperature they usually mean how warm or cold the air is.
The air temperature outside can change a lot for lots of reasons such as:
time of day
time of year
where you live in the world
the weather
The air temperature inside can also vary a lot:
how hot or cold it is outside
whether windows and doors are open
whether there is any heating or cooling working in the building
any sunshine coming through windows
As the temperature changes we may feel too hot or too cold. When this happens we may want to wear different amounts of clothes. Lots of layers to keep warm when it is cold and less clothes when it is hot.
The temperature can change making us feel too hot or too cold. We can feel more comfortable if we wear the right clothes.
Dressing For The Weather
When I get dressed I need to wear clothes matched to the weather.
Putting on the right clothes means thinking about what I am doing today. Will be I be running about? Will I be outside? Do I need to wear school clothes? It also means thinking about the weather and the temperature:
I may need to wear clothes to keep me warm when it is cold
If it is hot I may need to wear clothes that help me stay cool
Sometimes it can be both cold and hot during the day. Then I might need to wear something warm that I can take off and put on when I need to
I may need a waterproof coat it it might rain
Wearing the right clothes for the weather is sensible. It means I can keep myself from getting too hot or too cold. I can stay comfortable.
If I don't wear the right clothes I may be too cold or too hot. This will make me feel uncomfortable and that is not OK. Adults may worry about me if I don't wear the right clothes.
Wearing the right clothes means dressing for the weather and thinking about what I will be doing today.
I Feel Cold
I feel cold because my body is too cold.
Feeling too cold is not comfortable. It can make it hard to do things. It can also make me grumpy or tired. Being too cold is not OK.
Things that can make me feel too cold include:
sitting for a long time
not wearing warm clothes
cold weather
being near cold sources e.g. open doors and windows
When I feel too cold I can do things to make me feel more comfortable:
wear warm clothing e.g. coat or jumper
run about when outside
ask to close a window or door
have a warm drink or eat a hot meal
It is not nice to feel too cold. I can feel more comfortable if I wear the right clothes and do things that make me warmer.
I Feel Hot
I feel hot because my body is too hot.
Feeling too hot is not comfortable. It can make it hard to do things. It can also make me grumpy or tired. Being too hot is not OK.

When I feel too hot I can do things to make me feel more comfortable:

take off any heavy clothes e.g. coat or jumper
stop running about
ask to open a window or close a blind or curtain
It is not OK to feel too hot. I can feel more comfortable if I wear the right clothes and do not do things that make me hot.
