Feeling sad is being unhappy and upset.
Being sad happens to everyone at some time.
It is OK to feel sad when something happens that we don't like or want.
People show that they're sad in different ways - crying, being quiet, avoiding others or wanting to be close to special people like a parent. Sometimes people shout and scream to show they are really sad.
After a while most people start to feel better. Sometimes talking to someone about why you feel sad can help. Being sad all the time is not OK.
It is OK to feel sad and it often helps to tell someone about it.
When I Cry
Crying is when tears flow from my eyes.
Crying is OK. Most people cry sometimes. It usually happens because they are sad or angry or when they have hurt themselves. Sometimes people may have tears when they are really happy. This can be confusing.
When I cry it is usually because I am upset or hurt. It is difficult for me to control when I cry. But sometimes I can do things to help. These might include:
taking a few deep breaths
doing something that makes me feel better
talking to someone
If I cry in front of other people I may feel embarrassed. I can remember that crying is OK and that other people cry when they are sad too.
Crying can just happen when I feel upset. This is OK. I can try to do something to feel better soon.
