CoUghs and Sneezes
Coughs and sneezes happen when we breathe out really quickly through our mouth or our nose.
Everybody will cough or sneeze at some time. We usually can't help when this happens. They tend to happen more when we have colds, flu and other germs. Sneezes can also happen for other reasons such as bright light and hay fever.
'Coughs and sneezes spread diseases.' This is an old saying telling people how germs can move between different people when we cough or sneeze.
When you need to cough or sneeze it is important to look away from anyone near you. Always put your hand or arm over your mouth when coughing. When sneezing it is important to use a tissue or handkerchief. If you haven't got a tissue, or can't get to it fast enough, cover your nose with your hands. After coughing or sneezing you may need to wash your hands.
Having to cough or sneeze is OK. Not covering your mouth or nose is not OK.

A cough is when air travels very quickly through my throat and out my mouth.
There are lots of reasons why I might get a cough. Usually they are a sign that I am fighting an infection. Most of time they are just a nuisance and don't cause any real problems. Sometimes it can help to take some medicine but mostly a cough gets better with time. If I am worried about my cough I can tell an adult.
When I have a cough it is polite to cover my mouth with my hand. This can help to stop passing infections on to other people. It is also important to wash my hands regularly when I have a cough. If I cough without covering my mouth people around me might get cross.
Having a cough can be distracting for people around me. I can try hard not to cough too much. Sometimes having a drink of water can help.
Having a cough is uncomfortable but I will be OK. Covering my mouth when I cough is important.
