First Then is a task organisation and management approach that can support children to become more compliant in following adult directed tasks. Children with social communication needs or difficulty accepting or understanding adult instructions are often more able to or willing to accept a visual system for directed tasks.
It is important to introduce the First Then system by choosing only activities that the child is already motivated to do. The aim at first is not to get adult directed task compliance but purely acceptance that activities are followed that are shown on the First Then board. This should continue for a few days before introducing a 'First' adult-directed task 'Then' a reward activity.
