What's involved?
This is an ideal end of session game to wind down and reward classes.
What's required?
A whole class game requiring no equipment.
How to play:
The class sit in their usual seating places.
The adult chooses four children to come to the front of the class.
The adult calls “Heads Down, Thumbs Up”. The class should sit with heads resting on their folded arms on their desk. They should be face down with eyes closed so they cannot see. The thumb on each hand should be pointed upward so it can be seen.
When the class are ready the four children at the front can then walk in and around the classroom. They each gently squeeze the thumb of one person and return back to the front of the class. The child who has their thumb squeezed should then fold both thumbs to show that they have been ‘chosen’.
Once the four children have squeezed a thumb they return to the front of the class. The adult calls, “Heads Up” so the class look up and the four ‘chosen’ children stand. The adult asks each ‘chosen’ child in turn to guess which of the children at the front picked them. The child at the front either nods or shakes their head. Once all four children have had their go guessing the round is over. If a guess is correct that child exchanges places with the child at the front ready for the next round.
Variation:
To make it harder all children chosen have to give their guess before the children at the front respond to let them know if correct.
Notes
Adults may want to monitor for inclusive play ensuring, over time, that all children have an opportunity to be out front.
