Supermarket Shopping

Supermarket shopping is buying food and other things we regularly need for the home.

Going to the supermarket is something we have to do. Some people enjoy visiting the supermarket and some people find it boring.

We often need to visit the supermarket even when we don't want to. Getting food and other household goods is something we all need. Most people do one big weekly shop and then pop into the supermarket or local shops for extra things during the week.

When at a supermarket it is important to stay close to the person we went with so we don't get lost. We may see lots of things that we want and be told we can’t have them. This may make us feel sad. This is OK. Most people have to make choices about what they buy and they can't have everything they want. We all have to learn to manage our disappointment and move on. Staying calm and not asking for lots of things is really helpful. Sometimes we may get one treat if we are good but not always.

Going to supermarket is something we all need to do even when we find it boring and don’t get treats.

Use the above example to help you create your own social story matched to your child's needs. You may want to modify some of the language for very young children but try to avoid losing precise meaning when using more accessible language. Creating social stories with photos or picture can often help too. This example is available in a printable format below.
