Coughs and Sneezes Social Story Examples

Coughs and Sneezes

Coughs and sneezes happen we breathe out really quickly through our mouth or our nose.

Everybody will cough or sneeze at some time. We usually can't help when this happens. They tend to happen more when we have colds, flu and other germs. Sneezes can also happen for other reasons such as bright light and hay fever.

'Coughs and sneezes spread diseases.' This is an old saying telling people how germs can move between different people when we cough or sneeze.

When you need to cough or sneeze it is important to look away from anyone near you. Always put your hand or arm over your mouth when coughing. When sneezing it is important to use a tissue or handkerchief. If you haven't got a tissue, or can't get to it fast enough, cover your nose with your hands. After coughing or sneezing you may need to wash your hands.

Having to cough or sneeze is OK. Not covering your mouth or nose is not OK.

Use the above example to help you create your own social story matched to your child's needs. You may want to modify some of the language for very young children but try to avoid losing precise meaning when using more accessible language. Creating social stories with photos or pictures can often help too. This example is available in a printable format below.
