Vasopressin

A hormone that has a function in helping to bond couples through the creation of loving feelings. Levels are increased following sex.

Vestibular System

This is a term to describe a range of senses involved in balance and movement. This includes equilibrioception (balance) and proprioception (sense of where the body is in space) and to some degree other senses such as tactioception (touch), nocioception (pain) as well as ophthaloception (sight).

Visual Impairment

Any significant difficulty affecting a person's ability to see clearly with their eyes.

Vowel

The letters a, e, i, o and u. All words contain at least one vowel or the consonant y. The letter y often takes the place of the i and e vowels. For example replacing an i in fly and an e in poorly.

Working Memory

Working memory is the capacity an individual has to perceive, hold on to and process information. Working memory increases until early adulthood where the average person can manipulate about 5 to 7 "chunks" of information at one time. A poor working memory will significantly affect the capacity to learn and will also impact on social interaction and behaviour.

Youth Worker

A qualified youth worker will be trained in supporting the social and emotional needs of older children and adolescents. They may also deal with behaviour issues. Some secondary schools will have a youth worker attached to support vulnerable pupils. Local authority maintained youth clubs are usually run by a qualified youth worker. Volunteer youth workers may not be qualified.
